Sheridan Community Hospital Volunteers have added a wonderful new program for front door greeting. There is a volunteer in the front lobby, located inside the Visitor's Entrance off of M-66, from 8-4 pm Monday-Friday. Each volunteer takes a 4-hour shift. There is a nice big work area where departments can bring the volunteers tasks to complete while sitting and greeting the visitors as they come in. They are trained in giving directions around the hospital, emergency preparedness, and the phone system.
This has added nine new volunteer positions to our already existing program, said Susan Wyckoff McFarland, Volunteer Coordinator. “Since the program began in July, it has been a positive new spin for the hospital.” Most of the people who are working the greeting desk are from Sheridan, but there are a few from Crystal, Ionia, and Sidney.
The volunteers, as a whole, do their part all year long by giving back to the hospital. Once again this year the volunteers gave $1000 to the Tree of Lights campaign. Some of the everyday tasks the volunteers do are delivering the mail; laminating; installing Lifelines, personal help buttons; making goodie bags for patients and kids; and of course making their famous 25 cent per bag popcorn. Once a month there is a meeting where they discuss where and what to spend the money they make from the Lifeline program, flower case, and the gift case. “We have departments fill out requests called Wish Lists, with a short description of the item,” said Wyckoff McFarland. “The SCH Volunteers enjoy purchasing items for the hospital and look forward to the meeting to see how they can help.” Other items the volunteers purchased this year were carts, flat screen TV, pulse oximeter, 20 analog clocks, utility carts, park benches, step stools, and much more.
